WSD research actively engages the individual and interdisciplinary subject areas of art, architecture, and landscape. For example, the UK and international research agenda of landscape architecture and garden design follow research interests and specialties of staff, postgraduate students, government and industry projects and other departments and centres within the College. Research is key to supporting theory to practice in an advanced collaborative global programme. The Centre for Arts and Design in the Environment (CADE) with WSD introduce exemplary projects and provide collaborative partnerships in environmental, art & design and conservation research agendas.
WSD staff have a range of specialist research interests including landscape theory, place and identity relationships through phenomena and scale, the influence of the visual language of film on design thinking, cultural-archaeological landscapes and cultural borrowing with reference to the Japanese-style gardens in Britain.
