My Writtle College
The horticulture degree scheme at Writtle offered a range of core and optional modules unrivalled by any other similar course in the country. I chose to study at Writtle because from when I first visited at an open day I clicked with the place. Everyone was so friendly and the grounds were beautiful. I was also attracted by the close proximity to London as there are loads of leading florist shops there... two of which I ended up working in during my studies.

Graduated: BSc (Hons) Landscape and Garden Design 2000
Nationality: British
Occupation: Landscape Architect; LiZLaKe Associates
My Writtle College
Initially, when choosing a place to study for my undergraduate degree, I chose Writtle because of the friendly, unimposing atmosphere. I was quite timid when I left school and Writtle felt a lot less daunting than many of the other, larger institutions I visited. After finishing my degree I stayed in Essex so Writtle was the logical choice to study when I chose to do my Postgraduate Diploma, and I still felt it offered as much or more than the larger institutions.

Alistair Bayford
Graduated: BSc (Hons) Landscape & Garden Design 2004
Nationality: British
Occupation: Chartered Landscape Architect / Special Projects Manager – Lee Valley Regional Park Authority
My Writtle College
There was just something about the unique setting and atmosphere at Writtle College that made it right for me. Additionally, the course was a science degree rather than arts, which I felt would give me the skills I needed in my career. As a Landscape Architect your main medium is plants, therefore you need an in-depth understanding of how they grow and how they are managed etc. Additionally Writtle’s course gave opportunities to engage with the second process in creating landscapes and their construction. That said Writtle was very much a design, build and manage course which are the fundamentals of any scheme.

My Writtle College
The Animal Science degree at Writtle offered the perfect stepping-stone to a career working with animals. For me, the course was perfect to enable me to progress to a degree in Veterinary medicine. Although there are many other similar courses, Writtle seemed a friendlier place to study, with better all round facilities than other courses I had considered. Lectures were enjoyable and presented well and backed up with excellent practical facilities. Friendly staff that are easily approachable helped make Writtle an easy place to study and learn.

Graduated: MSc Equine Science 2007
Nationality: British
Occupation: Scientist
My Writtle College
I initially wanted to be a vet when I was doing my A-levels; however, I didn’t get the grades in my first year and so decided to look into other things. I had been horse riding for a few years, but was more interested in the stable management side and when I saw this brand new course breeding course starting at Writtle I was intrigued. I looked at a few other agricultural colleges, but decided that I liked the close-knit community that Writtle offered.

The BSc (Hons) Equine Studies appeared to be the most varied of the courses available at the time. My Writtle College
The College was recommended to me by a former lecturer at another landbased institution as having a good reputation for its design course.
